Roadmap & Project Ideas

There are a large number of ideas for extending the toolkit to make it more useful to the HWR research community.  Some of these will be implemented as part of planned releases of the Core Toolkit, whereas most of them are there for the taking !  Some of the ideas we have are listed on this page.  If you would like to take up one or more of these projects, or have other ideas for projects, please let us know.  Please also see the Community page for ideas on participation in the Lipi Toolkit effort in general.

Ideas for Toolkit extensions, Tools, Other contributions

There are a number of ways in which Lipi Toolkit can be used, or enhanced and made more useful. Some project ideas are listed below. If you are interested in any of these projects, or would like to propose a new project, please let us know so we can update this page.  Also see the Forums on SourceForge for more ideas and discussion.

Tools

Lipi Toolkit already provides some tools, but many more needed ! Some examples:

  • Data collection tool for WinCE platform (PocketPCs)
  • Data collection tool based on an external digitizing tablet such as Wacom

Recognition

  • Additional features for shape recognition - The current core toolkit only supports (x,y). Useful additions would be slope and angle based features, structural features, global shape features (eg. Rubine Features).
  • Additional classifiers for shape recognition, especially discriminative classifiers such as Kernel Discriminant Analysis (KDA) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) for shape recognition.

New Platforms

  • Support for WinCE and mobile platforms - so that LipiTk-build recognizers can be deployed for embedded devices like mobile phones, Pocket PCs etc.

Engines for New Scripts

Development of character recognizers for new scripts. Existing algorithms from the toolkit can be used. This would in turn require data collection, building and tuning recognition engines, and building some prototype recognition applications. Once built, you can choose to (but are not obliged to) host the recognizers here as a pre-built recognizer for those scripts.

Applications

Just about any kind of cool (or simply useful) demo or application that demonstrates the power of pen input ! These would not become part of the toolkit, but can be hosted here for others to use and enjoy.
