Quick Links

Overview

ACECAD Digimemo is a portable device that captures user’s handwriting on a normal sheet of paper. The sheet is placed over the digitizing pad of the device and while writing, the (digital) pen’s position is recorded in the form of X-Y coordinates and stored in device’s on-board memory.

The digimemo-dct 1.0 is a GUI tool that facilitates the creation of handwriting datasets by collecting handwriting data samples from different writers using ACECAD Digimemo devices. For a given script, data collection from writers is performed using specialized forms attached to the devices[1]. The output of the tool is a set of UNIPEN files organized into a directory structure, containing writer’s profiles, collection procedure details and the digital ink data.  The executable file for the digimemo-dct is released with version 1.0 (source is not included).

Enhancements & Bugs Fixed

This is the first version of the data collection tool and hence enhancements and bugs fixes are not applicable.

Known Issues

  • Some of the UNIPEN files may be missing in the output folder. This could be because of the virtual box size being insufficient or device malfunction. If the virtual box size is insufficient, increase the DeltaSize in the configuration file. In case of device malfunction, the error cannot be corrected but can be prevented by taking the following precautions:

    • Do not use the device in the vicinity of equipment that generates strong electromagnetic radiation or magnetic fields.

    • Ensure that the batteries are replaced if the pen and pad are used for a long time. Please see the device user manual for indications of low charge in the batteries of the pad. If the strokes are missing, twisted, lengthened or shortened, it is an indication to replace the batteries in the pen.

    • For more precautions, please see the user manual of the device.

  • One of the common problems encountered during data collection is: the user forgets to press the Next Page button on the device after every page. A practical solution to this problem is to make the user write the page number on top of the page before filling the page . This acts as a reminder for the writer to press the button.

Backward Compatibility

This is the first version of the tool and hence backward compatibility is not applicable.
